Backcountry Skiing & Riding

Backcountry skiing or riding is an extension to ski resort area skiing, taking you beyond the boundary to untracked powder ski descents.

Aspen Expeditions has been guiding the winter backcountry around Aspen, CO & Marble, CO since 1976. Our unique relationship with the Aspen Skiing Company and the White River National Forest allows AE's IFMGA/AMGA trained or certified mountain ski guides to take you on a lift-served backcountry tour, ski mountaineering ski adventure and/or backcountry hut trips.

Backcountry around Aspen is either accessed by a ski area lift or uphill skiing with Alpine Touring equipment. All of our tours our privately guided and customized to your skiing ability. Depending on conditions a backcountry ski day can encompass a beautiful powder ski descent or a modest scenic ski tour in the winter wilderness.

Aspen Lift-Accessed & Off-Piste Skiing
Experience lift accessed backcountry ski or riding descents on a unique 'out-of-bounds' experience beyond the slopes of Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands or Snowmass with an AMGA ski guide.

Classic Ski Mountaineering
Ski mountaineering introduces the advanced skier to out-of-area riding. Our guides will take you into the backcountry to go up and down some of the amazing winter ski ascents that abound in the Elk range.

Winter Backcountry Camping
This course is an excellent base for the aspiring mountaineer. Whether your goals are to climb some of Colorado's 14,000 foot peaks in the winter, travel to Alaska or join an expedition to the Himalayas; this course is for you.

About Alpine Touring Skis & Gear
As an advanced intermediate or better alpine skiier you can experience the backcountry on AT (Alpine touring) equipment without having to learn to telemark.
