Winter Backcountry Camping
Expedition Training

Whether your goals are to climb some of Colorado's 14,000 foot peaks in the winter, travel to Alaska or join an expedition to the Himalayas; winter camping is an excellent base for the aspiring mountaineer.

In most high mountain environments there is often extended camping on snow or ice. In order to adequately prepare you winter camping/expedition training we will cover all the necessary components of surviving and living comfortably in the snow and ice.

Some of the key skills covered are; choosing the correct gear; choosing an appropriate campsite; setting your tent up to withstand winter storms; digging a snow cave; efficient, healthy & delicious cooking; moving along in winter environments.

Itinerary

Day 2 - After a hearty, warm breakfast and dependent upon your goals, build an ice cave, go on a ski tour, or practice mountaineering skills. Stay another night or head back to the trailhead.

Day 1 - With an early start, head to overnight winter camping site on skis, snowshoes, or on foot depending upon location. Set up camp in mid-afternoon. Settle in and cook a delicious high-altitude meal. Check out the millions of stars and doze off amid the winter silence.
