Pyramid Peak Amphitheater Hike Off the beaten path to the base of Pyramid Peak
Overview
Unlike its famous neighbors the Maroon Bells, the rugged north face of Pyramid Peak is hidden from view as you arrive at Maroon Lake. The spectacular high alpine setting of the Pyramid Amphitheater is typically only enjoyed by those with sites on climbing the 14,000 foot peak. Most day hikers will never enter this remote corner of the Elk Range.
Once detouring off the main trail to Crater Lake, we will enter pristine forests and ascend across alpine scree fields to our final destination and lunch spot - the 12,100 foot base of the huge north face of Pyramid Peak. At just over 14,000 feet, Pyramid is one of Colorado's most dramatic looking peaks!
We will have time to take pictures and wander around the Amphitheater. After a packed lunch, we will descend to Maroon Lake and transport back to Aspen. This hike will definitely set the bar high for all future outings and may even plant the seeds for a climb of a 14,000 foot Colorado summit. |
