Journey to Mount Sopris & Castle Peak
Summits One & Two

This introductory Seven Summits tour is an excellent first step onto Colorado's high peaks, combining high-altitude, overnight backpacking and a significant vertical elevation gain. Your journey into the rarified air will take you to the summit of the imposing Mount Sopris (12,952') , revered by the Ute Indian's as 'Mother Mountain' because of its dueling summits.

You'll also climb Castle Peak (14,265'), a relatively friendly fourteener, running a spectacular ridge system to Castle's summit.

Although the routes are non-technical climbs, they are still challenging ascents, requiring physical fitness and stamina. Reaching the summits of these peaks will offer you a lifetime memory with some of the finest views in Colorado!

Typical Itinerary

Itinerary

Day 1 - Acclimatization Day: On your first day in Aspen, you'll have the opportunity to go paragliding or fly-fishing, using one of these chosen activities as a means to acclimatize to the Aspen area (elevation 7,980 feet). Your acclimatization day also includes one high mountain gondola ride up Aspen Mountain and lunch at the Sundeck Restaurant (elevation 11,200 feet) where you'll enjoy amazing views of the valley's highest peaks, including the Maroon Bells.

Day 2 - Thomas Lakes: We'll begin our climb of Mount Sopris by hiking into Thomas lakes at the base of the mountain. At a little over 10,000 feet, we'll set up camp in a gorgeous alpine setting and enjoy a relaxing evening together, preparing ourselves for a summit attempt early the next morning.

Day 3 - Sopris Summit: Depending on conditions, we'll take either the Northeast shoulder or head directly up Sopris's year-round snowfield from the north. In just a few hours we'll be standing on the summit taking in impressive views of the Roaring Fork Valley and many of the other Seven Summits in the vicinity.

Day 4 - Aspen Rest Day: Internationally recognized Aspen, Colorado is perhaps one of the most famous mountain towns in North America. You may choose to simply relax and enjoy the town or consider an additional outdoor activity with Aspen Expeditions. From world-class restaurants, premier shopping and cultural events to the friendly faces of our mountain guides, make sure you take full advantage of all the Aspen area has to offer!

Day 5 - Castle Peak: This relatively friendly fourteener has dramatic ridges and sweeping views from its' exciting summit pyramid. After an early morning start, we'll gain the northeast ridge, climbing it to Castle's summit over looking the whole Elk Mountain Range. After our descent, we'll return to Aspen and celebrate with a farewell dinner at one of the finer restaurants in town!
