Classic Ski Mountaineering Hayden Peak, Castle Peak, Garrett’s Peak, and many more…
Overview
Ski mountaineering introduces the advanced skier to out-of-area riding. Our guides will take you into the backcountry to go up and down some of the amazing winter ski ascents that abound in the Elk range. Our favorite areas offer untracked ski ascents/descents of as much as 4,000 vertical feet. We familiarize you with specialized alpine touring skis, bindings, climbing skins, avalanche beacons, rescue equipment, layered clothing. As you progress we can present the reality and challenge of this sport: searching for the best skiing by the safest route and descending or connecting summits with interesting and technical traverses. Advanced skills including glacier travel, crevasse rescue, and the use of crampons and ice axes can be included to prepare the aspiring mountaineer for continuous days above tree line in the most modern, lightweight style. This three day course is set in spring conditions with the goal of climbing up and skiing down three different classic summits in the Elk range. This course is more of a guided tour than the ski mountaineering course. The basic skills will be taught but the focus will be obtaining our different objectives.
This trip is ideal for advanced alpine or telemark skiers or snowboarders. Some backcountry skiing or boarding experience is required. Level I avalanche education or other formal mountaineering courses helpful. |
