Aspen 14,000' Peak Ascents
Scrambles in the Elks

The Elk Range located in the Central Colorado Rocky Mountains offers some of the best mountaineering and technical 14,000-foot peaks climbs.

Ranging from conditioning "hikes" up Mt. Sopris or Castle Peak to technical routes on Capitol Peak, Pyramid Peak and the Maroon Bells; Aspen Expeditions has guided these peaks safely for thirty plus years. Our knowledge of the mountains will add security and enjoyment to your climb.

Most of these alpine ascents are single day climbs. Some are better suited as two-day ascents. Technical and non-technical routes are available on some peaks, with the ideal climbing season ranging from June to September. Depending on snow conditions, some peaks are excellent ski descents!

What you should Know:

Typical Itinerary

Itinerary

Pre Trip Orientation - Aspen Expeditions guides peaks in single day climbs (Summit Day) or two-day climbs staging a high camp the night before (Approach Day & Summit Day). In either scenario, we arrange a Pre-Trip Orientation at Aspen Expeditions' main offices (426 So. Spring St, Aspen) between 4:30 PM & 5:30 PM the night before your adventure. This gives you the opportunity to meet your AE guide, review your climb together, go through the clothing, equipment and food required for the trip and to set a start time and meeting place for the next morning.

Approach Day - On two-day peak climbs, you'll begin your Approach Day by meeting your AE guide at a designated meeting place, drive to the trailhead and begin the trek toward the peak (4-6 hours) - establishing a high-camp at the base of the mountain. That afternoon and evening you and your guide set up high-camp and make preparations for an early morning start the next morning. Moreover you'll simply relax and enjoy the pristine beauty of Colorado's high country.

Summit Day - Whether your Summit Day begins from your high-camp as part of a two-day climb or you are making a "trailhead to trailhead" one-day push, you'll begin your ascent with a pre-dawn start.

Summit times range from 10 AM to 1 PM, depending on you, your guide, weather and other considerations. Descent times may vary as well. Typically, your Summit Day is completed by mid afternoon. Bear in mind for all two-day climbs, you and your guide will also need to break down your high-camp and hike out to the trailhead.
